Patagonia's Twelfth Annual Halloween Play Opens Oct. 23 — and It Isn't a Haunted House

"Heidi's Monkeys: COPPER," an original drama by a Patagonia writer, runs three performances at the Tin Shed Theater. All proceeds go to Patagonia United Methodist Church.

PATAGONIA, Ariz. — This year's original Halloween play follows a fifteen-year-old girl who has figured out that if she never goes to sleep, nobody will die.

Heidi's Monkeys: COPPER, a new play by Patagonia writer Matthew Lysiak, opens Friday, October 23 at the Tin Shed Theater on N 3rd Avenue. Three performances only. Admission is $10, under 18 get in free, and every dollar goes to Patagonia United Methodist Church.

Heidi Mayerson has been on a children's cancer ward for four years — long enough to have made herself its night watch. Somebody is coming for one of them, and the only thing standing in the doorway is a teenager who has decided not to blink.

The play runs about 75 minutes without an intermission, in three acts, and is performed by a company of ten drawn largely from Patagonia families.

"Every year somebody asks me why the Halloween play is so disturbing," Lysiak said. "The honest answer is that what actually frightens people isn't monsters - it is something far darker. That is what I try to tap into with this play."

Matthew Lysiak is a nationally recognized journalist and author of Fiat Food (Saif House), Newtown (Simon and Schuster), Breakthrough (HarperCollins), and The Drudge Revolution. The story of his family is the subject of the series Home Before Dark, which premiered on April 3 on Apple TV+ Heidi's Monkeys: COPPER is his twelfth Halloween play.
