Event Information
Artists Vincent Amicosante and Kathleen Kendall, two longtime Cape Cod artists, have paired up to present Stylin Statements, an exhibition featuring their Magical Realism, Representational Stylistic Aesthetic, at the Bowersock Gallery.
"Stylin Statements," opens with an artist reception 7 to 9pm. on June 19, and will run through July 2.
"It's an honor to represent two of the Cape's powerhouse artists," Owner Curator Steve Bowersock says. "While both have mastered their shared style, imbued with allegory, the commonality ends there."
"These are two strong painters that have honed their personal vision as well as their skill sets. They are totally individual, and thoroughly engaging."
Amicosante's work leans into Magical Realism. On these canvases nothing is as it seems. Each butterfly, vintage advertisement, flower or other object, points to something more.
His work has been exhibited internationally. Among his many accomplishments Amicosante participated at the Biennale International dell'Art Contemporanea in Florence, Italy. He's exhibited stateside at numerous venues throughout Mass. including The Cape Cod Museum, and the Copley Society of Art.
"Stylin" will feature his clear, bold colored canvases, and continue to explore long loved themes, including his "Tulip Time" series.
"I've always done things in series, the works have overlapped into one another from the beginning," Amicosante says. "Some of my earliest works are revisited in this series."
Much of his work speaks to the environment and the fragility of existence, though he prefers to leave interpretation up to the viewer.
Amicosante will present a few of his usual larger scaled works, which he's known for, but will include a number of smaller canvases "which are fragments of bigger paintings I've done," he says.
Kendall's work is rooted in the metaphysical and spirituality; often exploring mythic narratives. Her soft, muted chroma largely focuses on the human visage, her love for Pre-Raphaelite works in evidence in her individual style.
The faces, and features are romantic, ethereal and captivating, and distinct. Often the eyes that look out directly at the viewer are surrounded by symbols, creatures, and markings that arrest and send the mind spinning. There are works with single eyes, and others featuring creatures, both sharing additional images inviting reflection.
"This is art that invites you to analyze or contemplate or just feel your own reaction," Bowersock says. "This show has it all, images that are beautiful, and soothing when taken at face value, but a true exercise in rumination when you give them time."
