Remember the old movies where the police switchboard operator would intone “Calling all cars...”? Today’s readings recall that sense of urgency for everyone to do his or her part. In the first reading Amos exclaims it wasn’t his idea to warn against the people’s actions, but “the LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel.” In Mark’s gospel, “Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two...” Christianity is not a meditative sitting-around religion, but a get-up-and-go-preach- the-good-news-care-for-the-poor-heal-the-sick way of life. We are all called to be missionaries.
