University department in Chillicothe, Ohio Ohio University Chillicothe's Shoemaker Center is considered one of the top athletic facilities among the state's regional campuses. The venue was dedicated in 1979 in honor of the late Myrl Shoemaker, who served in the Ohio House of Representatives for 24 years and was lieutenant governor from 1982 until his death in 1985 at age 72. Prior to its construction, the Hilltoppers' home games were played at Bishop Flaget School. Shoemaker insisted that the campus have a top-of-the-line facility and was extremely influential in the process of the building's construction. The Shoemaker Center features a full-length basketball court, free-standing baskets, bleacher seating to accommodate approximately 2,400 spectators, and a walking track that is heavily utilized by both campus members and community residents.
