Venue Information

Founded in 1980, the center was the first professional performing arts facility to be built in the Bronx. It presents both popular and classical performances, as well as traditional ethnic art forms in its 2,300-seat concert hall and 500-seat theater. Performances are usually offered well below the standard admission prices and many are free. Artists appearing over the years have included the Dance Theatre of Harlem, the Chieftains, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, the Odori Festival of Japan, the Latin Pianos in Concert, the Balinese-American Fusion Theatre, the Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble, the American Indian Dance Theatre and the National Dance Company of Senegal.

The gallery emphasizes contemporary art in its main exhibition space and smaller graphics gallery. Shows range from one-artist shows by major innovators—such as Romare Bearden, Christo and Robert Wilson—to surveys honoring established and emerging Bronx artists.
