Venue Information
The Apollo Theater as we know it today was built in 1913, when it functioned as a burlesque theater, before later shifting its focus to variety revues. Today, the Apollo Theater schedule includes concerts, performing arts, community outreach and educational programs. It serves to recognize, honor and advance the influence and contributions of African American artists.
Over the years, the venue has featured many of the biggest names in music, oftentimes receiving credit for being the launching pad to the stellar careers which followed. Ella Fitzgerald was just 17 years old when she made her singing debut at The Apollo Theater. Jimi Hendrix, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5 and Lauryn Hill are just a few more of the now house-hold names who got their starts at the legendary venue. More recently, Sir Paul McCartney and The Artist formerly known as Prince have appeared on the famous Apollo Theater schedule.
