Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Takeshi Kitano’s SONATINE! A world-weary gangster in Tokyo is assigned to take his clan to Okinawa to help settle a dispute. He's suspicious of the assignment, and within a couple days he finds himself in the middle of a bloody conflict. He retreats to a remote beach, where he rescues a young woman from an assault. Soon it becomes clear he's been sent to Okinawa so that others can take over his lucrative territory, and he plans revenge. With a memorable score from superstar composer Joe Hisaishi (Studio Ghibli films) and a cast that includes several Kitano regulars (Susumu Terajima, Ren Osugi), SONATINE is the culmination of the first era in Kitano’s filmmaking career featuring the brutal violence, comedic playfulness, and melancholic atmosphere that made him an international name.
