Event Information

Five Freedom Songs was conceived in collaboration between Julia Bullock and Jessie Montgomery between 2017-2018. The artists created a song cycle that honors their shared African-American heritage and the tradition of the Negro spiritual, while also experimenting with non-traditional stylistic contexts. Each of the five songs in the cycle are sourced from the historical anthology Slave Songs of the United States. Julia Bullock is an American soprano originally from St. Louis, MO. The New York Times called her an "impressive, fast-rising soprano... poised for a significant career." Jessie Montgomery has been described as "one of the most distinctive and communicative voices in the US, as a player and creator." (BBC) VA Arts Festival audiences will remember her for her work as a violinist in Catalyst String Quartet, and as composer for VAF's 2019 co-commission with Dance Theatre of Harlem and 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution: "Passage" performed as a world premiere in Norfolk.
