About

While bluegrass and mountain music is being experimented with by less experienced bands in the mainstream, Gillian Welch continues to remain true to the music's roots. In addition to her traditional style, Welch's talented finger picking, powerful voice, and solemn style have led to sold-out tour dates and five hit albums. After eight years without a new album, fans are thrilled over the recent release of The Harrow & The Harvest, as well as ongoing 2011 tour dates around the US. Gillian Welch was exposed to music from a young age, as her adoptive parents were entertainers. In college, she played in a goth band and surf band before falling completely in love with bluegrass. Soon after, she met her long-time musical partner, David Rawlings; though all of Welch's music is created with Rawlings, the duo have decided to simply play under Welch's name. While Gillian Welch's first two albums gained popularity for their sparse style, and her tour dates were highly sought after, it wasn't until after her work as a producer and performer on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack that her career began to take off. Her third album, Time (The Revelator) became critically acclaimed and was nominated for numerous awards. Gillian Welch's latest album, The Harrow & The Harvest, has become one of her most highly acclaimed yet, and certainly her highest charting. Since the album's release, Welch and Rawlings have been engaged in 2011 tour dates. The remaining shows feature appearances at the Winoca Festival, Austin City Limits, and the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Many of the shows are already sold-out, so buy your tickets for Gillian Welch's 2011 tour dates soon!
