Busboys and Poets was founded in 2005 by noted activist and restauranteur, Andy Shallal. It is located on U Street in the commercial area of NE Washington. Shallal's vision was to create a space where people of diverse backgrounds could congregate and share their ideas around food and beverages. The name was inspired by noted poet and activist, Langston Hughes, who was a busboy.

Since opening, Busboys and Poets has been wildly popular and has been featured on Good Morning America, C-SPAN, and NBC News.
