The National Dance Institute of New Mexico (NDI-NM) was founded in 1990 by Catherine Oppenheimer after NDI's first founder Jacques d'Amboise visited New Mexico. The people at NDI-NM produce a huge 500 kid show in Santa Fe every year the first week in May and the last week of April. Some of NDI's shows are... 100 years of American Music and Dance, Route 66 Legends of the Road, Got Jazz, READ! a Celebration of Reading, and What's the BIG idea?. Since 2003 NDI has had two advanced teams: the S.W.A.T. (Super Wonderful Advanced Team) and the Celebration Team. In that year NDI formed the Xcel team. In 2008 the NDI folks introduce the Junior XCel and XCel apprentice teams.

Since 2003 NDI has been housed in a large building with two large studios that can become a theater and four smaller studios, and because of the size NDI decided to host Broadway Theater Dance Workshop, a two week musical theater intensive for ages 14–20.
