About

As The Sing Off’s third season winners, these Arlington, Texas natives know how to please a crowd. The a capella group of five vocalists, Scott Hoying, Kirstie Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola, Pentatonix began with three friends: Kirstie Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, and Scott Hoying at Martin High School in Arlington, Texas. When a local radio show hosted a competition to meet the cast of Glee, the group arranged a trio version of "Telephone" and sent it in. Although they didn’t win the competition, it sparked attention around their school. After their version of "Telephone" gained attention on YouTube, they continued performing at their school and at small venues in the area. With The Sing-Off auditions announced for season three, they added two more performers, Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola, and renamed the group "Pentatonix". The group’s name is a play the “pentatonic” scale, or a scale with five notes per octave, just like the five voices in the group. They successfully auditioned for the show and eventually went on to win the title for Season 3. The group derives its influences from pop, dubstep, electro, reggae, and hip-hop. Pentatonix is famous for their covers of hit songs from artists such as Maroon 5, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and David Guetta. As of January 2012, the group began releasing music videos and preparing to release their much-anticipated EP, PTX Vol. 1, which has already reached #1 on the iTunes Pop Charts and #11 for album (pre)sales overall. Want to see Pentatonix live in your hometown? Make sure to demand them and let them know where to visit on their next tour.
